Mayor Javier Villalobos Swears in 29th Mayor and officials of Houstonville

Students from Sam Houston Elementary School saw government in action as Houstonville’s 29th mayor and city officials were officially sworn in during a special ceremony at McAllen City Hall today.

Mayor Javier Villalobos led the proceedings in the commissioner chambers, making the event both memorable and inspiring for the young leaders, their teachers, and parents. Following the ceremony, Mayor Villalobos encouraged the students to take pride in serving their school and community. “Today is an important day because you get to help make changes in your school and in your community,” said Mayor Villalobos. “What you learn now will help you with your future careers.”

The unique program at Sam Houston Elementary gives students a firsthand understanding of local government, civic responsibility, and leadership. By stepping into real-world roles such as mayor, commissioners, treasurer, and city manager, students not only learn how government works but also practice skills in teamwork, decision-making, and public service.

Educators see this as an opportunity to nurture leadership qualities at an early age while reminding students that learning can be both meaningful and fun. As part of their visit, the students also toured the McAllen Cable Network studio, where they saw how government communicates with the public through media. The experience highlighted how education and government go hand in hand, preparing the next generation to be informed citizens who will one day shape the future of their communities.
